Why YouMove?
I chose YouMove as the name for my classes because it highlights the power of choice. I provide music and movement sequences; you choose how to do them. I provide a focus for the hour; you choose how to use it, or choose a different focus if it suits you better that day.
The word “YouMove” also applies to me. While you are moving as you, I am moving as me. I am being present, listening to my body, and creating organic choreography in the moment, sharing it with you as an invitation to try it yourself, adapt it, sense what it feels like to you, in your body.
As we move together as our unique selves, we revel in the power of choice.
Why is choice such a big deal to me? Because it relates to body autonomy, the right to control what happens to our own body.
And body autonomy is under threat.
Entire classes of people are being told what they may and may not do with their bodies, such as where they may live, whom they sleep with, when and whether to become pregnant, what ideals they must conform to in order to be safe. When men started saying “Your body, my choice” on social media, that was a crystallizing moment for me.
Choice has always been a feature of my classes. Now it’s front and center.
I move, you move, we all move in YouMove!
