Body Appreciation

Appreciating the shoulder rotation involved in the downward block

I am a big appreciator of appreciation. I try to express appreciation to others as often as possible, frankly because I like it so much myself. In fact, I once won an award for “Most Appreciative of Appreciation.” Not kidding!

I like how appreciation can take different forms. It can feel like being

Seen

Heard

Understood

Recognized

Acknowledged

Admired

Enjoyed

Thanked

Praised

Prioritized

Rewarded

Valued

Given the resources you need to do and be your best

Body appreciation means giving those same feelings to your body. Examples from my experience:

  • When I learn the anatomy of a body part, I can sense it in more detail, which makes me appreciate it more and makes the body part itself feel seen, recognized, acknowledged, admired.

  • When I support my body with something it needs (sleep? food? movement?), it feels valued, prioritized, and given the resources that it needs to do and be its best.

  • When I listen to my body’s voice, my body feels heard.

Of course it’s really me having those feelings, but I like imagining it’s it. My body then becomes like a character in my story, sort of like a pet, wanting things, enjoying things, saying things, having all the feelings right along with me.

You don’t have to see your body that way. But expressing appreciation to your body however you can is very good for your health and wellbeing.

For the entire year 2025, my Mindful Dance Fitness classes will focus on body appreciation, with the intent to build resilience. As we move and sweat for a solid hour, we will practice body appreciation by learning fun anatomical facts, enjoying our bodies in motion, listening to our body’s voice, expressing body gratitude, and giving our bodies the resources they need.

Just attending class on a regular basis is giving it a resource it needs. Join me won’t you?

Classes are twice a week:

Wednesdays 10-11am California time

Saturdays 9-10am California time

Through body appreciation, we build resilience!
